Our school is a Title 1 school. Every time it rains, we look for the new leaks. We hold our breath that the Internet will actually work every morning. My students are predominately Hispanic and all qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Very few of my students have ever been out of their neighborhood. Many of them have never seen a forest, the ocean, fields of grass, etc. I did an informal survey last year and less than fifteen percent of my students had a single book at home. However, they feel they are middle class. They are loving, compassionate students. When they see pictures of the slums in Calcutta, they respond with, "Now, THAT is poverty. We need to help them." They are warriors who fight against the odds to improve their knowledge. I know every teacher thinks their students are the best. However, I know mine are, and I am honored to know mine.
