Our school is nestled in a small rural area in Pennsylvania. This year, I have eleven boys and nine girls in my first grade classroom. Our building houses grades k-2. Our total enrollment is less than 300 students. As I wait for the arrival of my students each day, I can hear the sounds of eager little feet and laughter coming down the hallway, ready for the day. It is when the instruction begins, that I can quickly identify the students who are not quite so eager after all. Already in first grade, I can see the apprehension in the eyes of some. They are struggling with letters, words and reading text. However, many can read full pages of text without hesitation. Some have difficulty recognizing numbers one to twenty, while others have already met our first grade goal, recognizing and writing numbers to one-hundred twenty! Already, I can see the various levels in the room. Daily, I provide intervention to students who are at risk, as well, as provide enrichment opportunities!
