I teach first grade in a very diverse multicultural school setting. In the midst a very affluent community the school sits next door to a very large apartment complex that attracts low income families. A typical classroom has a wide range of students learning at extremely different ability levels. Differentiating is key to meeting the needs of second language learners, autistic students, vision impaired students, along with advanced high achieving and all hard working students. I have a student from Iraq with very limited English language skills. She has been progressing, but at a very slow pace. When given the opportunity to use the computer to practice basic phonics skills, this student eagerly responds and soaks up the graphics, music and animated way the app teaches her.
