Our starting date this school year was postponed by the shooting of a former student and community member by a police officer. Our students have missed 7 days of school due to the protests, looting and vandalism in the community that has followed this shooting. What has begun is our fall sports programs, whom many coaches have communicated that our students are more than ready to return to their school and further their educational goals. Many of our students cannot afford a calculator of their own. This year, our district is starting a federal program that allows all students to receive free lunches, not only those whose family incomes qualify them for free and reduced-price lunches. 68 percent of our students received free and reduced lunches last year, though it is likely that the real percentage is higher but some families never filled out the paperwork.
