Kindergarten is such a critical year for children. Since they are entering school for the first time, along with many of the basic skills, kindergarten is their introductory course to organization. Many students learn a few organization skills in the home from parents who are taking care of them and their belongings. However, that is not the case for my students. Over 70% of my students live below the poverty line and thus have families that are broken. Likewise, many of them don't learn much about organization at home because their home situations are unstable. Most of them live in some state of transition which accounts for their lack of self management skills that help them stay organized. Since most of my students enter school below grade level, time on task is very important. I have to protect every moment of learning in order to prepare them for academic success.
