As the beginning band specialist for my district I serve approximately 250 students in 5th grade in 7 different schools. My classes are 30 minutes and occur in spaces ranging from cafeterias to locker rooms. My class is the first instrumental (band) experience the students have. The students in my program receive a well rounded musical experience. From solos to ensemble playing, classical to modern musical hits, students are given as many opportunities to experience and create music as possible. Many students however face difficulties at home that no student should. Split families, low incomes and in some cases missing parents are just a few difficulties that our students face. Through scholarships and other donations, every student who wants to participate gets the opportunity to learn the instrument of their choice and participate just like any other student.
