Flexible seating will encourage my students to fully participate in groups while maintaining a laid-back atmosphere where they can focus on our project-based learning activities. Desks do not lend themselves to group work as well as flexible seating does, and we do a lot of peer teaching tasks in my class where students help each other in small groups or with a partner. I already have a few spots where my students can get out of their desks and work on the floor or on some floor cushions, but I would love to give all of my kids those options so they don't have to fight over the few I have. For this project, I have requested items like two small sofas for students to work and conference with each other. For my kids who have some energy to kill, I have requested yoga balls for them to sit on while working at a table I already have. When they have choices, they really take ownership of their learning. They take responsibility to do the right thing and make good decisions. Yes, even something as simple as fun, flexible places to sit have had a positive influence on some of my students. Now I just need to help to offer that to the others!
