For the past six years, I have been moving 30 desks in and out of the way to provide more room for my students to move around the room for various activities. A flexible seating arrangement will allow not only for my students to be comfortable in my classroom, but it will also allow for me to utilize every minute of every class period. I'm taking a major risk and going desk-less this year to accommodate the more than 30 students that I will have in more than half of my classes. This will also allow me to move throughout the room more easily to ensure that I can make contact with each student. By having an environment that reflects my teaching of diversity and tolerance of others, students will feel more comfortable expressing themselves and be the creative individuals that they are. The desks that are currently in my room are old-fashioned and take up a great deal of room. With more than 30 students in any given class period, we waste valuable class time just moving desks most days. The folding tables will allow students to have a solid writing surface if they choose to do so, and the chair cushions will make the metal folding chairs provided by the school much more comfortable. The additional beanbags and bungee chairs will supplement the chairs that I have already purchased.
