My students have a vast array of intelligence and reading levels. I have students who I have to dissuade from reading while I am instructing and students who I have to beg to read a short chapter. I have students who are off the reading level charts and can breeze through Hemingway, but also students who struggle through reading low level novels. They are uninterested in the subject matter, or have not found story matter they like. Simply put, they are embarrassed and they feel defeated reading the "usual" 8th grade texts. My students are extremely typical in the fact that they love technology and most would rather read quick bites of information or looks at pictures.
