Buena Vista has a unique program because we are a Spanish Immersion school. This means that in 1st grade, 90% of our day is conducted entirely in Spanish. The other 10%, which amounts to about 20 minutes per day, is focused on specific English skills. The students at BV have an exceptional opportunity to learn all their regular academic skills in a second language, and by the end of their schooling in our immersion program, they have not only experienced a high-quality education, they have achieved fluency in 2 languages along the way. Students at BV love their experiences and learn to make connections logically and academically, as well as become creative problem solvers as they learn to adapt to learning in Spanish. Although it seems like immersion students just magically "absorb" the language skills, there is actually some very targeted work done by the teachers and school staff to explicitly teach Spanish vocabulary, structure, and grammar without direct translation.
