Our classroom would greatly benefit from safe active stations. Research indicates that movement breaks in the classroom throughout the day benefit focus, memory, emotional balance and management, and increase engagement, cooperation, and overall feeling of success. Using these stations would help students choose appropriate outlets for frustration and aid in individual management of mood. Often times students can break for a moment to refocus, release energy, calm frustration, or reenergize and return to activities fully engaged for learning. These stations would be available all day as needed. They would encourage social development, individual exploration, gross motor development, and emotional management. Students with exceptionalities will benefit from movement breaks and often return to an activity refocused. The gross motor activity can connect the memory and attention portions of the brain. Incorporating these active stations would provide a safe and appropriate outlet for frustration, stress relief, mood balance, and sensory input while building gross motor skills, coordination, and balance.
