If you only considered the neighborhoods that most of my students come from, you'd find they have less than a 10% chance of going to college. That's not good enough. I don't think so, and my school doesn't either. College preparation is our "true north," and we believe that 100% of our scholars will get into and graduate from college. We hold our scholars to incredibly high standards, because we know what they are capable of achieving. Last year, these kids were the highest performing readers of all public, open enrollment schools in the city. They've got what it takes. We work harder. We stay in school longer. And we do whatever is necessary to make sure our scholars are ready for college, both academically and in terms of their character. Every day, we ask them to show us 100%; we ask for respect; we ask for grit, and in turn, we do everything we can to set them up for unparalleled academic success.
