My third graders are young and determined scholars who have big dreams and goals set for themselves. They strive to be leaders and many have expressed a strong desire to make the world a better place. My students are facing and will continue to face many challenges and barriers related to their skin color, backgrounds, and social class. These are challenges that they were born into and that without the adequate support and resources will lead them down the path that is unfortunately most traveled by students in their community. This path is NOT one I want my students to get put on. This path leads to a high school where only 30 percent of the students graduate. This path leads my students to a life of street violence, drugs, and incarceration. Students in our community deserve the same chance at success that the students in the more wealthier areas are given. My students will be agents of change and all they need is for their passions, strengths, and dreams to be cultivated.
