My students live in a small rural community that does not offer a great deal of upward mobility. Over 70% of my students live below the poverty line and cannot afford even basic school supplies. However, this does not have any bearing on their desire to succeed as adults. Many of these students have plans to go to college or have full-time jobs. They are in desperate needs of the supplies in the classroom that will help them achieve these ventures. They have a desire to learn, grow, and truly change their place in life. They believe in themselves and one another. They have created a community of support among themselves and their teachers. Our school district is extremely small and I teach approximately 100 students 9th-12th grade. As a small district, funding is often an issue and the students suffer because of it. Teachers here spend a great deal of income on supplies for students so their classrooms can function, and so their students can succeed. The students deserve supplies.
