I have about 116 seventh grade students. There are no two alike. Some of my students say they love math. Some of my students say they like math. Unfortunately, many of my students say they hate math. For too long, math has been the subject that doesn't make sense to them. It is the subject that has been thrown at them without the proper background knowledge that is needed to succeed. I need time to build concepts and put pictures in my students' minds of what we are talking about. Too many of my students do not have a thorough working knowledge of their basic math facts. It is a tragedy! As soon as we begin a lesson, my students feel trapped and believe they cannot move forward because computation plays such an important roll in what we are working on. I want to build confidence within each one of my students. I believe allowing them to move forward and use calculators is just the beginning.
