Each day, my kindergarten students walk into my classroom, ready to learn and explore. In years past, I have used worksheets to get our day started and to keep students on task so that others could eat breakfast in the classroom. After seeing the need for more hands-on activities and more opportunities to practice social skills, I have decided that our days will be better started with conversation, creativity, and engagement through the use of morning tubs. Using a variety of materials will allow students to explore and converse with each other as they prepare for the day. By sparking creativity as students build and manipulate the items, their brains will be readied to absorb and interpret the new information and ideas to which they are exposed. The morning tubs will allow for some flexibility and choice and will give students more chances to interact with one another on a personal level. I am requesting Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, Legos, Magna-Tiles, K'Nex, Cuisenaire Rods, Foam Dominoes, and a Brain Flakes set to help my students explore math and science. I am also asking for Sterilite tubs to hold all of these items. Because students will be able to choose from four of these materials on a daily basis, they will be exposed to a variety of textures and shapes, which is great for my kinesthetic learners. They will be developing critical thinking skills, problem solving, and teamwork--skills that will translate to all kinds of real-life scenarios both in and out of school--as they play and explore. Half of my students come from low-income households, so it is my hope that I can provide them with items they may not have had the opportunity to use.
