Learning is difficult when there is a language barrier. The other students in the classroom seem to understand each other but my students don't hear it. My students are deaf. They come from very different backgrounds than their peers. Most of my students come from homes where sign language isn't used. Families don't know how to communicate their Deaf child and rely solely on gestures and facial expressions. Can you imagine never having a conversation with your child or you parents? Depending on the severity of the hearing loss, this is a common occurrence with my students. Then they come to school! My assistant and I try very hard to immerse our Deaf students in language to ensure that they understand, not only the classroom content but also the world around them. Our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are surrounded by children like themselves and even Deaf and Hard of Hearing mentors! What an exciting place to be!
