I am a second grade teacher in the East Bay. Our school qualifies as a Title 1 school with a large percent of latino students coming from low socio-economic families and receiving free and reduced lunches. Our school is one of the few Spanish Dual Immersion program in the area. Students are taught in Spanish for 75 percent of the day in second grade. The goal of the program is to have fully bilingual and biliterate students by the end of elementary school. Students can then continue to take advanced Spanish courses or even take a third foreign language in high school. I have been fortunate to have my own four children go through the Dual Immersion program and I can attest how wonderful the program truly is!
