My assistants and I work very closely with our students. Each day, we rotate them through centers where they work with an adult on a specific academic skill. At the end of last year, we reflected on where we needed to improve to better serve the needs of our students. We agreed that we needed to give our students more independent learning tasks where they could complete an ability appropriate activity by themselves. Our students need to learn to make mistakes and to rely upon themselves to figure out a better solution. They need opportunities to develop critical thinking skills through a wide variety of learning tasks in order to increase their functional independence. This is a life skill that needs to be taught, modeled and fostered at a young age! Additionally, my students struggle with age appropriate relationships. These activities would allow my students the ability to learn appropriate social skills through sharing, turn taking as well as learning to work with a peer.
