I currently teach a course called Freshman Experience. The class is based on literacy and helping my students build life skills that will help them get through high school and beyond. My students are mostly African American and Hispanic. They face many of the challenges teens face growing up in an inner city environment. We are also battling the achievement gap that minorities in America are dealing with nationwide. My students need more than a "traditional" education. Everything in this project is geared towards giving students knowledge of self and knowledge of wealth. The goal is to give students the proper understanding of the world they live in and how they can survive in it. The education they will receive will stretch far beyond a classroom.
