Our school is one of the poorest in the district, with 90% of our children receiving free and reduced lunch. It is unique in that our population is extremely diverse. Our students are bright and eager to learn, but face many challenges that other kids their age will never know. The school building itself is more than one hundred years old, and because of space issues, we do not have a music room. Like other music teachers in similar schools, I go from classroom to classroom on a cart. One of the challenges in teaching this way is finding a portable musical instrument that all children can play during class.
