My classroom is comprised of 8-10 students in a self-contained, special education classroom for learners on the Autism Spectrum, primarily in kindergarten and first grade. The students my class receive intensive special education support for academic needs, speech-language delay, functional and independence skill development, fine/gross motor needs, and social/emotional and behavioral needs. The classroom is staffed by a special education teacher and 3 para-professionals with support from a speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, adapted/developmental PE teacher, and school psychologist. My students spend approximately 0-20% of their learning day in a general education setting, and 80-100% of their day receiving special education services. Students on the autism spectrum are highly visual and kinesthetic learners, often having impaired auditory processing, language, and attention/focus skills which are required for academic success in more traditional classrooms.
