The students that I work with, all have average to above average intelligence but struggle with grade level demands. These kids try hard and want to be like all the other students but due to their learning disabilities they are not able to keep up with their peers. They do have average intelligence so they are able to see that the other students are able to master the material fairly quickly. This is very hard on their self esteem and they start to think of themselves as dumb. Our school is a positive and supportive environment for our students. We provide support for them in multiple ways. They have additional teachers in the classroom to help with grade level course work. They are also provided with small group assistance to help them develop some of the skills they are lacking. One of the skills they are lacking is the ability to work independently. They have gotten back so many papers they worked so hard on only to have to correct everything on it they are really feeling defeated.
