Students love art class, but what do they love even more? Being able to make choices about their artwork. As I began my career teaching art, I became very interested in Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), the practice where students are considered artists. Students take control of their work, plan, execute, and experiment on their own just like a real artist. Students are so much more engaged and invested when they are able to make choices and have control over their artwork. They are proud of their work because THEY did it, instead of being told what they have to do. TAB-based teaching is a student-centered approach to teaching in the art room and it also differentiates for every child. I have students who love to draw, some want to paint, and others like to work three-dimensionally. TAB-based teaching allows me to meet the needs of all my students. My students are in need of quality materials that they can use in centers on TAB-days in my classroom. For my students who love to paint, they will be able to use the tempera paints to paint a subject of their choice. For students who love watercolors, they can experiment using liquid watercolors on the thicker paper that will not buckle when painted on. My students are also in need of oil pastels that they can use for our drawing center. The construction paper will be used to replenish our collage center for my students who love to cut and glue. With your donation, I will be able to provide my students with opportunities to experiment and explore their own artistic interests. They will be able to take the techniques and processes that I have taught them and apply them in an artwork of their choice.
