My students attend a Title 1 public high school in Washington, DC, whose low standardized test scores earn us the distinction of a "focus school". But the reality is that my students have courage, and many of them overcome obstacles we can't even dream of in order to just walk through the school doors in the morning. Homelessness, substance abuse and violence are ever present for some of our students and figure heavily into our discussion of how we can help our students as a school. Our demographic is 98% African American, and 99% free and reduced lunch, with a 29% special education population. Truancy and low graduation rates are a major concern of our high school and so our major initiatives focus on attendance interventions, and family engagement, as well as promoting high graduation rates and college acceptance. Through all of this, we have a world-class marching band which brings pride to the school, and we have made major strides in all areas of the school.
