My students that run our food pantry are juniors and seniors in high school. They have selected my class because they want to serve in their community. While it is an English class in nature, it also is driven by social justice issues and service leaving. It produces an opportunity to reach out to those in need-and for this project, the people in need are their own friends and peers who won't always receive a meal when they leave school for the weekend. My students run our school food pantry and don't know which kids are identified by administrators and guidance counselors, and my students will never receive a "thank you" from the individuals benefiting from the food pantry due to the anonymity of it, but they are committed to the pantry every week.
