My students are full of life and charisma. Growing up in the projects of Newark, NJ, these students have a view of life and education much different than my own. Much of their life is about survival or being a caretaker, not being a kid or a student. Engaging them is very difficult because they do not see the value of learning. I must catch their attention and then create a love for learning. Teaching reading makes it that much more difficult. It is not traditionally kinesthetically engaging and it takes a lot of internal thought and processing. Not only for my students, but kids in general, are now used to things being on demand and quick. Reading takes a lot of work, especially when he or she may be so far behind. It also can be embarrassing or overwhelming, so in that case they do not try at all.
