Our school is a suburban/inner-city, public high school (grades 9-12) in southwest Alabama. Our school is a community school with deep ties to our local community. Many students live within walking-distance of the school. Our student population, which numbers between 700 and 900 students, is 99 percent African-American. The majority (over 95 percent) of my students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. Despite the odds that poverty and low-parental involvement has stacked against many of our students, in past years our students have consistently made adequate yearly progress (under state guidelines mandated by NCLB) as well as seen improvement in the graduation rate. My journalism students work hard. They're dedicated, creative, and driven, and they're hungry to see their work published and praised.
