Water use is a critical topic that affects all of us. It is part of the responsibility of science educators to create problem solvers. The quality of this water is important to all local organisms. As students test for dissolved oxygen, phosphate levels, ammonia and nitrogen they will understand that all water is not equal. Some sources of water contain nutrients for a successful ecosystem, whereas others limit the type of life that can survive. Students will be taking water samples from various locations, including the local wetlands, the nearby ditch and the water used in the school's garden. They will be testing this water using the kits to identify any trouble areas. They will compare and contrast these areas with their chemical makeup and the vegetation and animal life, along with observing where humans have affected/created some of these areas Students will explore the impact that humans can have on the water and therefore on the life around the water source. We will work to have an environmental engineer from a local company come speak to the students about how and why they build watersheds in an area.
