My students attend a neighborhood school within walking distance of their homes. Many have never had the opportunity to adventure into other parts of the city. They rely on the school breakfast and lunch program to provide them with proper nutrition during the school day and often have not been introduced to foods that many people take for granted (blueberries, mangoes, cauliflower, etc.). Each child has been identified as a student with a specific learning disability and s/he works in a regular education classroom for a portion of the day and is also provided with special education support for a portion of the day. My students receive special education support in the areas of math and reading/language arts. Differentiation plays a major role in our daily educational activities allowing children to learn at their own pace. They are capable learners who learn in a variety of different ways - not always using the "traditional" approach.
