Our high school has approximately 1700 students and each student is required to take three science courses, including chemistry or physics. Over the past ten years, our student socioeconomic status has changed drastically. Ten years ago, only about 15% of students qualified for free and reduced lunch price programs. Today, approximately 43% of our students qualify for these same programs. Due to the economic hardships that many of our students face at home on a daily basis, many of them are unable to provide their own basic school supplies, including calculators. While the socioeconomic status of our students has changed, the science curriculum is still very rigorous; each student must take at least three years of science, including a year of biology and a year of chemistry or physics. Many students take physical science as a freshman, biology as a sophomore, then choose either chemistry or physics to take a junior.
