My students need math and literacy center stations. Second grade is a very important year for developing reading and math skills. Students learn to read for understanding new concepts, place value, and for the first time ever must do long, computerized standardized tests. To best prepare my students for success in all of these new academic areas I will implement centers in the classroom to maximize time, address students’ individual needs, and review previously learned concepts. The centers requested in this project will offer students hands-on practice with concepts they tend to struggle with such as reading comprehension, following multi-step directions, and three-digit addition and subtraction. These centers will help students develop their social skills as well, as they require students to communicate and cooperate. While students work at the centers, I am able to pull small groups of students to focus my instruction on their individualized needs.
