Our buildings are old (Ida Tarbell taught here) and have many nooks and crannies from additions. As a result of restructuring to accommodate our shrinking population, my new classroom will be a former teachers’ lunchroom. A perk of this location is an enclosed courtyard just outside my door. Picnic tables will turn this courtyard into an outdoor classroom and facilitate conversation. As a community, my students and I will design and create a ‘garden’ space (project based learning) within the courtyard. Throughout the year, students will sit around the picnic tables within the space to discuss writing projects with peers and conference with the teachers (myself and our intervention specialist). Members of our “Diverse Book Club” will gather around these tables and discuss books within our small community, figuring out what life is like for kids who live similar lives and kids who live lives we can’t even imagine.
