Interactive Read Alouds are my newest passion. An interactive read aloud is a systematic method of reading a book aloud. I, as the teacher, am doing the word decoding work and my students are asked to do the thinking work. Through careful planning, I can scaffold my student’s understanding of the book being read. I am also able to model strategies for comprehension as well as teach vocabulary (which is SO important for my ELL students) with this method of balanced literacy teaching.
Why do I choose to use interactive read alouds? Research has demonstrated that the most effective read-alouds are those where children are actively involved in asking and answering questions and making predictions, rather than passively listening. Talking, writing, and/or drawing in response to reading gives kids an opportunity to make their thinking visible. My students have taught me that passion is contagious and therefore I feel GREAT instruction starts with passion. Some books just BEG to be read over and over again. In order to have meaningful conversation, you must start with a great book!
The books I have included in this project will most definitely spark conversations! These titles are some of my most favorite books. In the past I have borrowed from fellow teachers or the library. However, my sweet students deserve to have access to the books they fall in love with all year long so that they may enjoy them over and over again. Another key importance of this project is that with an interactive read aloud, careful planning is needed. So I need time to LIVE with the book and purposefully plan from it before I attempt to read it to my students.
