My 8th grade students are typically ages 13 - 14 who come from various backgrounds from low poverty to the middle class socio-economic levels. Many students have had little science activities and labs in their elementary years. The students are eager to learn new things. They have creative minds and learn best with kinesthetic / hands-on activities that can stimulate the brain and relate to the reading materials we are studying. The school is a public school in a medium size metropolitan area. Most students are bussed to the school. The population of the school district is 8,553 with about 31% white, 59% black, and about 8% Hispanics. My particular school has around 1700 students of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
