I have the opportunity to teach 7th and 8th grade at-risk students in an urban public school district. My school is K-8, and almost the entire school population is African American. We do have a few Hispanic and white students. All of our students receive free and reduced lunches. My language arts students are fun-loving and fun-ny! Unfortunately, though, many of my students' families don't have the resources to purchase requisite supplies to ensure they succeed in my classroom. Many of my students come from very broken homes, which manifests in behaviors that disrupt sustainable learning. So, I would love to provide as many engaging, authentic "tools" and texts to encourage them to focus on sustainable learning and wondering about what they'd like to become someday to change their lives, their families' lives, their communities, and their world!
