My students are 6th graders attending a K-6 elementary school in a lower socio-economic area. Due to the nature of the structure of an elementary school, my sixth graders, unlike those in middle school settings, do not receive daily science instruction by a science teacher, but rather just 100 minutes a week. As a self-contained classroom teacher, I seek ways to supplement their experiences in science with high interest, hands-on activities. My students come from very diverse backgrounds and lower income families. Thus, with little to no parental financial support and very limited/restricted school funds, the purchase of a new incubator is not possible without seeking other funding sources. Yet these students deserve it!! They are motivated, enthusiastic, inquisitive sponges who have a love of learning just as much as those students attending in more affluent schools.
