We have a varied demographic at our school. We have parents who don't blink an eye at buying their child a $100 calculator, but we also have parents who do not have the money for such an expense. Students living in motels, wondering if they will be out on the street, not knowing where their next meal is coming from. These are the students who will benefit from these calculators. They are proud and hungry for knowledge. They want to fit in and not be embarrassed when they can't afford something that is required in their math class. We do have a rental program where students can rent a calculator for $20 for the school year, but we only have 200 calculators. That is not enough for a population of approximately 1600, with about 30% on free and reduced lunch. I would like to start a scholarship program with these 20 calculators - provide them to students who cannot afford even the $20 rental fee. They will be used year after year with a focus on students in need.
