I teach mathematics to a heterogeneous group of energetic, sweet, bright, and kind 11 and 12 year old students. My students are a combination of regular-education students, ESOL students, and special education students. Our school supports inclusion and co-teaching is the preferred inclusion model for mathematics instruction. My students are shy at first, but open up as we build trust and bond. Our school is a Title 1 school with 74% poverty as identified by free and reduced lunch. My school strives to build community within our student body. The faculty is committed to fostering citizenship, collaboration, and goodwill among our students. My teammates and I will do anything for our kids. We allowed them to roll us in toilet paper, at years end, as a celebration of their successes during the year, we coach, tutor after school, and provide personal support as a matter of routine, but more as a matter of care. We would like to extend such connections globally through STEM.
