Most of the scholars in our building come from homes with low socio-economic backgrounds and/or minority families. Our school is limited to the types of class-set novels that are provided. While scholars are exposed to the classics, they do not get the opportunity to read stories like "The Hate U Give" and passages that are relevant to the events of today’s society. I am asking for a class set of the book, "The Hate U Give" as well as the teaching guide. In class, this novel will provide the chance for my students to read about characters that are like them in culture and similar situations that happen in their neighborhoods. This will help students to research non-fictional texts that relate to topic (which is an area in literacy that students can grow in) and for them to engage in debates and honest dialogue with classmates, teachers, and their families about the reality of the tragic results that come about every day.
