My students are Title I students in a poor/low middle income class neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. It is made up of the many different diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds. I teach grades 7 and 8 science - an age group that can be difficult to reach due to their disengagement of academics. As Carl Sagan stated, "Every kid starts out as a natural-born scientist, and then we beat it out of them. A few trickle through the system with their wonder and enthusiasm for science intact." I want to ignite my students with the wonder and enthusiasm that may be lost in science. My goal as a teacher is to engage my students and in particular, the middle school girls, in believing in themselves and encourage them to think outside of the box. By giving them these hands-on, inquiry based, positive engaging materials, my students will spread their creative and academic wings!
