Students in third grade have a wonderful sense of "Why", and "Where did that come from?". Their passion for wanting things to be better in a global sense, makes teaching them wonderful, albeit sometimes difficult. We spend a lot of time trying to find out answers to these questions, often the discussion goes home. One student last year became very obsessed with the Titanic. (We were learning the patterns of -ink, -ank, -unk). This summer he made his own birthday cake into the shape of the Titanic...and this was a subject discussed in the Fall! To this day, I have never once had a parent ask me, "What are you doing in class?" Because usually through lively discussion at home the answer to the question, "What did you learn in school today?" is never "Nothing".
