The science behind reading says that intentional, structured phonics instruction produces stronger readers than other approaches. I would love to supplement my district's current reading program with backward decoding slides and mouth formation cueing cards. I would use these slides to help my students identify vowel sounds, then rimes (the end of the word), then the onsets (the beginning sounds) to increase their fluency. I would also get mouth formation cueing cards. These alphabet (and other letter combination) cueing cards show the students how their mouths should be positioned to correctly form each sound.
