My pre-kindergartners are in a Title-1 school located in a high-poverty area, with nearly 100% of our students living in very low-income households. My students face daily struggles that individuals living in higher income households may not ever have to deal with - hunger, homelessness, gang violence, abuse, and racial injustices among many other common issues. My students live in the Baltimore community where recently, a young man died in a police related incident, which sparked citywide riots. Despite all, my students remain resilient. With the proper support, they flourish into high achievers and develop critical pro-social skills. Regardless of their struggles, my students come to school eager to play, read, write, explore and learn. They love reading, working on projects, exploring in work stations, and interacting with each other. As school is their second home and a consistent respite from the outside chaos, it should be an inviting and comfortable environment.
