My students are excited sixth graders who are anxious about starting middle school. While I keep my school supply list minimal, there are always parents who are unable to provide these basic materials for their children. The unemployment rate in our county is 5.5%. Rather than reprimanding my students for coming to class unprepared, I try to provide whatever materials they need. Last year, I bought pencils, paper, and erasers every week when I went grocery shopping for my family. By having these materials available, each student is able to participate in all activities without being embarrassed about not having the supplies that other children have.
