As I sit in my classroom, I glance up to look out my window and see a giant piece of plywood that now covers it to protect it from being broken or spray painted by local gangs. I teach in an area that populates a community of a lot of high risk children but contains some of the sweetest, most hardworking students you will ever meet. A class in a normal elementary school will have 1 or 2 students WITH heartbreaking stories, in this school, each classroom will have 1 or 2 students who DOES NOT have a heartbreaking story to share. I work along side a hard working and devoted staff that all work to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. The joy of reading for these students has to be taught at school because their parents do not have the educational background to support them at home. Many children come from homes where there is no academic support. Parents of my students do not speak English or are not at home because they are working to make ends meet.
