My 8-year-old students are not only capable of identifying and tracking year-long goals, they are ECSTATIC about it. Setting ambitious goals and monitoring progress towards those goals gives my students a sense of independence and choice. Their learning becomes their responsibility. Their goals become their destination and the school year their journey. My school encourages teachers to teach to the individual student. That means knowing where each student stands at all times and meeting them where they are. These data-tracking binders act as a sort of weekly conferencing tool with each of my precious kiddos. Who knows better what students understand and what they don't than the students themselves? Therefore, I use these binders as one source of assessment of student achievement in all content areas.
