My 34 4th grade students come from diverse backgrounds and bring many languages, traditions, and strengths to our classroom. Our school is a caring community of 600 students plus supportive staff and families. My students come with a wide variety of interests, challenges, and strengths. We are striving to learn more about ourselves and each other so we can make choices that give every student the opportunity to work and learn in a positive and productive environment. I started the school year offering a variety of seating options for students who have a difficult time sitting in a hard plastic chair at a desk all day. We have opportunities for standing at a tall table, working on the carpet with a clipboard, and using stools of different heights and movement possibilities. What I discovered is that many students showed better sustained focus in alternative seating.
