First graders love routine. They love what I call, "The Common Area" in the middle of our half circle of desks but they need a more defined place to sit. They would love to have their own letter, animal or shape to sit on. Specifically, they need a large comfy rug. My students excel in verbal and problem solving skills. It is in the common area that we talk about everything from life problems to academics. We discuss things such as, "How can I best handle a friend who is invading my personal space?" to "How can I best tackle this math problem?" However, as smart as they are, they are still first graders who tend to be very wiggly and talkative. A defined place for them to sit will help organize our discussions and make them more effective. By donating our student carpet, you are helping to create an environment more conducive to learning.
