I want my students to have access to diverse books that they can see themselves in and can connect with. Many times my students have learned about these figures in the media but they do not have any real in-depth knowledge. For students to be able to connect with a historical figure, they need to be able to really get to know the person. That's why I have chosen biographies of people who have diverse backgrounds just like my students. My students are free to check out books from my classroom library and take them home for as long as they like. My goal is for my current and future students to always have access to well-written and representative literature. Students will be able to choose from these books not only to increase their knowledge of current events but also see what rich backgrounds they come from.
